Encountering God – QT

Quiet Time – One of the most important spiritual discipline of a Christian. Ptr Peter Tanchi tells us, you can’t have a buffet meal once a week and not eat your regular meals everyday. So it is with our spiritual lives, we can’t just attend worship service on Sunday and not indulge in the word of God from Monday to Saturday.

From my experience, not having my quiet time with God for several days shows tremendous impact. I become selfish, angry, easily annoyed, self-absorbed, and walking in the flesh, following it’s sinful desires. Quiet time is more than just reading or listening to the Bible. I can read my Bible and still not have my quiet time. I would like to share 5 things that I think can contribute to have a meaningful and great quiet time experience.

1. JOURNAL – Write down key verses that tells you about God, his character, his promises, his commands.
2. MEDITATE – Meditation is not having a blank mind but reading and re-reading the words of God and who He is from your journal.
3. INSIGHTS – write down the principles / teachings based on your interpretation or on what God tells you like God doesn’t say life is perfect and without problems but He is in control. Writing down wonders and miracles from your own life. (example from Psalm 105)
a) Write your own prayer, confession, thanksgiving, adoration, that God puts in your heart.
b) pray for others.
5. WORSHIP – This can be done anytime, before, during, or after your Bible reading.

These are some of the things that I did to have a meaningful and great quiet time. No wonder 1 hour seems to pass by so fast and is even not enough. However, it is easily neglected because of our busy schedules and the hurly-burly of our hectic lives. I myself have fallen short many times but when I am able to do this, my soul just falls in awe at the wonder of God’s amazing love, His abounding grace and forgiveness that He continually pours out in my life. I cannot stop but sing praise to His name and worship Him, the True and Living God who deserves all the honor, glory, and praise.

I encourage you, try it and make it a habit. Surely your life will never remain the same. God will transform us from the inside out and He is eager to draw near those who seek Him with all their heart. He will be found by you and you will have an awesome encounter with God. God bless you all.

Being Filled with the Holy Spirit

“The Christian Life is not difficult, it is impossible.” A statement i often hear from Pastor Peter Tan-Chi. And from the recent leadership conference speaker Pastor Edmund Chan saying “I CAN’T!” We cannot live the Christian life, especially not on our own strength. That is why we need the promised Holy Spirit. We are sealed by the Spirit when we put our faith in Jesus but it is another thing to be filled by the Holy Spirit day by day, moment by moment.

Paul commands us in Galatians 5:16 to walk in the Spirit so that we will not satisfy our sinful desires. A quick prayer of asking God to fill us moment by moment may help and is necessary in the situations of our lives. However, it may not be sufficient in itself. It goes hand in hand with a constant Quiet Time, one of the spiritual disciplines.

Being godly and spiritual cannot be established or attained by a busy, fast-paced, hectic life – running here and there, full of activities and programs, meetings, stress, and overtimes. We need to set aside time everyday to spend time with God, reading His words, praying, listening, worshipping, meditating on Him. This allows us to experience His presence and puts us in a place where He can fill us, mold us, and transform us from the inside out. This changes our perspective, our values, our priorities, and our behavior as stated by Ptr. Peter in his recent message.

Without reading God’s word, how can you know if a voice that you hear is of God or not, if an angel that appears to you is of the light or of the darkness. We believe in a speaking God but it comes to a lot of abuses these days. You can hear people claiming “God told them…” But it contradicts the Bible. Pastor Edmund shared a secret in listening to God in 3 words – “HE HAS SPOKEN!” The Bible is essential. Read it again and again, year after year. You’ll never hear a mature Christian saying i stopped reading the Bible because i already know it even in their later years in life. So knowing God’s will and hearing God’s voice starts here.
