Dark Side of Technology / Digital Cocaine

I’m blessed to have gotten a copy of this book. I would like to share some of the things that I have read:

Dark side of technology

DST#1 – TNT
Together but NOT Together

All of us are in one room and yet everyone is busy connected to their own social circle, online. Their is no emotional connection and meaningful interaction.

Scene 1: Friends goes out together to play bowling. One of them bowls first, she scores a strike! She cheers and turns around to friends who are engaged in their mobile devices…

Scene 2: Everybody is having dinner and all of them are on their phones – dad’s on Netflix, mom’s on Facebook, brother is on Minecraft, sister is on YouTube, baby is on cartoons…

DST #2 Easy access to Pornography

Dr Jeffrey Satinover – “… Modern Science allows us to understand that the underlying nature of an addiction to pornography is chemically nearly identical to a heroin addiction: only the delivery system is different, and the sequence of steps… ”

One of the world’s largest porn sites, which receives 14.7b visitors in 2013… Reports that in the US, mobile phones are now the most common way that their online pornography is viewed.

If we are not careful with our phone use, it is an easy gateway to addiction. This is a serious warning specially to us parents who have teenagers.

DST#3 Facebook Addiction
Does this need more explanation? Get an app tracker that logs our cellphone usage, it will easily show us how many hours we are spending on social media such as messenger, viber, texts, and Facebook.

A cybersecurity and technology journalist, Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai reveals – “as it turns out, receiving and answering a notification results in a hit of DOPAMINE, a chemical neurotransmitter associated with the motivation and reward response in the human brain. Dopamine is also released in high quantities when we consume drugs or have sex. Social media notifications can have the same addicitve effect.”

China, Taiwan, and South Korea have long accepted Internet Addiction Disorder as a psychological diagnosis. They have setup 200-300 counselling centers and hospitals that offers treatments. We have advertised that drugs are harmful but this is not true with digital technology – Facebook, gaming, texting, etc, are much socially acceptable even though they are just as chemically addicitve as hard drugs.

DST#4 Gaming Addiction

Caught in the Net: How to recognize Signs of Internet Addiciton author Dr Kimberly Young explains to WebMD.com – “Can a game truly be an addiction? Absolutely. It is a clinical impulse control disorder, in the same sense as compulsive gambling.”

Addiction is defined by the article as:
1. The person needs more and more of a substance or behaviour to keep him going.
2. If the person does not get more of the substance or behaviour, he becomes irritable and miserable.

Dr Young says compulsive gaming meets these criteria, and she has seen severe withdrawal symptoms in game addicts. “They become angry, violent, or depressed. If parents take away the computer, their child sits in the corner and cries, refuses to eat, sleep, or do anything.”

By these definitions, I have to admit that I was a gaming addict with Clash Of Clans. I started with a few minutes, then progressed to hours upon hours. It has consumed my thoughts and energy as I studied to be a better player. My wife disapproved of it, so I played in secret in the bathroom and when I’m out. Because I can’t play openly and we’re homeschooling, I became easily irritated and angered by anything. My mind wanted more and more of it. Every victory and perfect attack I do makes me feel good. I quickly raised my level with effeciency and was becoming the advisor for our clan. “They need Me!” is my battle cry. They are complete strangers, except for my 2 brothers, who were already there before me (not to brag) but were playing below my level due to my diligent study in Youtube… When I’m alone in the province, I play till my hearts content, maybe 6-8 hours a day.

Looking back, this probably triggered my high blood pressure because of the constant excitement that I am in with all the actions and wars, the quest for victory and glory. With the researches in this book, I guess I can conclude that it was due to gaming. Thank God’s grace I was able to stop it after 2 years plus of playing. Side effects??? We’ll get to that part next time…

From the author – the goal is not to ban technology and go back to the Stone age but to raise awareness and to bring back the balance in life.

Steps to Freedom:

1. Admit

2. Repent

3. Turn to God’s grace through Jesus Christ. He offers us a new life and a new beginning. (1 John 1:9)

Stay tuned for more…

Mrs Potiphar

Luke 11:34 your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also will be full of darkness.

In Genesis 39, we can see the story of Joseph and Mrs Potiphar. Verse 7 says that she TOOK NOTICE of Joseph and made advances. She was very persistent (v10). She had her eyes on Joseph, a person whom she is not meant to have any relations with because she was already married. Her eyes sets her desires aflame and wanted to have an affair with a handsome man even if it was illegal.

Let’s take a look at another example in 2 Samuel 11, the affair of David and Bathsheba. Verse 2 says from the roof she SAW a woman bathing… His eyes ignited his heart with a desire for her. He inquired about her and even sent for her. As the story goes, she got pregnant and plans of cover up and murder followed.

In this modern world we live in, we are bombarded with billboards and ads of almost naked women. Women flaunting their sexy body parts with the belief of “if you got it, why not show it.” Pornography is everywhere in the web even in social media like Facebook, video site like YouTube, even search engines like Google, which we thought were safe. You can read my previous article for more on the effects of pornography.

As the verse in Luke says, our eye is the lamp of our body. If we are not careful with what we look at, sin will start growing in our hearts, arousing our desires, and soon we will fall into sin and actions that will lead to death. It is not a sudden occurrence but a slow downward spiral, which you wouldn’t even notice until it is too late. It is also known as the process of hardening of the heart.

Just like Joseph, we need to use evasive action – RUN. We need to run away from these temptations. Jesus said “if your right eye or hand causes you to sin, gouge it out, cut it off.” We need to take sin seriously in order to deal with it because when we play with fire, we will surely get burned.

Aside from physical avoidance, a more efficient approach is to be filled with the Holy Spirit. We need to spend time with God, get strength from His presence and His word. We need to be conscious of God moment by moment.

In the past, I filled myself with pornography. It degraded my view of women, viewing them as objects to consume. Even my family life was affected. I easily burst into rage with my children and was often selfish in my thinking and desires, especially when it comes with my wife. Reading the bible became a ritual, and my spiritual walk with God was dry. My desires of listening to His direction and following Him dwindled. But thank God for His mercy that He doesn’t treat us as our sin deserved, His grace and love ever steadfast and unchanging, His arms always open to welcome me back and waiting for me to repent and turn away from my wickedness. As David said in his Psalms, blessed is he whose sins are not counted against him (Ps 32).
God gives us a fresh start, reminding us not to live in our past sins and mistakes, to move on and look ahead. As the song goes – forgetting what lies behind, setting our hearts on the price, laying down every sin that would seek to hinder us. Let us be faithful to our calling because He is faithful to finish the work that He began in us.
Another passage that God reminded me with is in Romans 6:11-13 “Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal bodies so that you obey its evil desires.
Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to Him as an instrument of righteousness. For sin shall no longer be your master…” I had to stop reading my Bible and memorize those 3 verses and commit it to heart. I made several action points on how i can obey those verses and not give parts of my body to wickedness – my hand and my eyes.

As another new year starts, i practice avoiding looking at women that are wearing sexy clothes and I do not intentionally look for women to look at. Instead of using my cellphone to watch pornography, I play worship songs and listen to online messages. Most importantly, i turned my heart from being temporarily satisfied by sexual desires to being filled by the true Living Water, the only one who can satisfy the inner most longings, Jesus Christ. I pray for His Holy Spirit to fill me moment by moment, to totally surrender to Him my life and my all. I pray that you repent of your ways and turn to Him too. May God empower us to live in purity for His glory. God bless you all.

Tune in next time for more on being filled with the Holy Spirit.

Pornography and masturbation.

God is the author of sex. He made it and it is good. He made it good in the context of marriage. But Satan has been distorting it even from the ancient times like Sodom and Gomorrah, in the book of Romans and the other epistles by Paul.

What is bad about pornography and masturbation:
1. IT IS A LIE. We are exchanging the truth and purity of sex with our wives to artificial ones. The pretention of the actors and actresses, the days that they put on in filming, the deception that everything is happening all in one session distorts our expectation of sex and makes us frustrated if we don’t experience the same thing and if our wives do not commit to do the acts that we have seen.

2. IT IS ADDICTING. We might think that nothing is bad about it but sooner or later you cannot seem to pull out of it anymore. What you think you are in control of is now in control of you. You can’t stop thinking of it, you desire to do it again. So you become in bondage to it without you knowing it.

3. IT DEGRADES YOUR VIEW OF WOMEN. it changes your respect for women. You look at the women around you with impure thoughts and disrespect treating them like sex objects specially those women that are wearing seductive clothings.

4. IT LEADS TO ADULTERY. As you look at women around you, you start to look for those women that flirts around. And as the Triangle of Temptation comes – the right time, the right place, and the right woman comes. BAM! You fall into sin. It doesn’t take place all at one time but it is a slow fade, a low slide just like in biology class when slowly boiling a frog to it’s death. It doesn’t know the water is heating up until it’s too late.

ACTION POINTS:
1. REPENT. Ask God for forgiveness and turn away from it.
2. ACCOUNTABILITY GROUP. Find brothers in the Lord that will help you fight against temptation. It is like texting and calling them when you are encountering temptation and asking them to pray for you.
3. RENEW YOUR MIND WITH GOD’S TRUTH. There are so many passages in scriptures to help you overcome – as we remember “wrong thinking leads to wrong action.” We are no longer slave to it. We are dead to it. God has given us victory over sin. God has empowered us through His Holy Spirit.

4. WALK IN THE SPIRIT. The Bible tells us that we should walk in the Spirit. The desires of the Spirit is contrary to that of the sinful nature. When we walk with the Spirit, we think of things that are pure and holy. We desire to read God’s word and spend time with Him rather than engage in the internet.

5. PROTECTING THE YOUNG. Pornography now is so rampant and easily accessible. It pops out of search engine image results even when you’re just researching with the kids and not looking for it. It is really not safe for kids to access the internet without our supervision. It might also help to get censoring or blocking softwares that are available.

6. PRAY AND SPEND TIME WITH GOD. Have your quiet time, spend time with Him who is our satisfaction. Let Him fill us and satisfy our desires. Allow Him to take control of us that we might take our minds off these things and focus on doing things for Him. Let’s continue to be in prayer as the it is a spiritual warfare. Let us pry for the purity of ourselves and our children.

In closing, let us remember that God forgives our sins through Jesus Christ’s death on the cross and His Resurrection. He purifies us from all unrighteousness. He empowers us by His Holy Spirit to be holy as He is holy. God bless you all.
